What was defined in the early seventies as "non-conscious architecture" by Pettena, as he thought about and wandered around the mountains or deserts of the North American West (About Non-Conscious Architecture, 1972), is now recognized and accepted as teaching and original imprint with regard to the Dolomites, the place of his childhood. The landscapes previously "recorded in the memory," fixed in an artificial material and then collected in a suitcase (Paesaggi della memoria, 1987), are here simply photographed and catalogued, thereby acknowledging at one and the same time the inevitable supremacy of nature, as "begetter" of architecture, and the acceptance of this lesson both conceptually and in its infinite spatial and linguistic.
